More than exceptional joinery: A story of passion, heritage and British craftsmanship with Ross Parker

With more than 220 years of heritage behind it, Denne Joinery has built a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship, British manufacturing and specialist expertise. But while the business is rooted in tradition, it continues to evolve through innovation, investment and a commitment to quality that recently saw the company shortlisted for Manufacturer of the Year at the Mix Awards 2026.

In this interview, Denne Joinery’s Managing Director Ross Parker reflects on what first drew him to the world of joinery, why heritage still matters today and how British manufacturing and passionate people continue to shape the future of Denne Joinery.

You joined Denne Joinery in 2005. What first attracted you to the company and the world of specialist joinery?

I was drawn by Denne Joinery’s combination of heritage and craftsmanship. It’s not often you find a company that has been operating since 1803 and still produces work of such exceptional quality.

Specialist joinery is also far more complex than people realise. It sits at the intersection of design, engineering and human craft. Every project is unique, and every piece has to be designed and manufactured specifically for its environment.

Over time, I’ve also become increasingly interested in the role timber plays as a sustainable material. When sourced responsibly and manufactured well, it’s one of the most environmentally positive materials we can work with.

What keeps you passionate about the industry after so many years?

No two projects are ever the same. Every project brings different materials, design challenges and technical solutions. That constant variation keeps the work interesting.

There’s also something incredibly satisfying about seeing raw timber transformed into finished pieces that become part of a building for decades. It’s a real, tangible result of craftsmanship.

Denne Joinery has been operating since 1803. Why do you think heritage and longevity matter when clients choose a specialist manufacturer?

Longevity creates trust. A company that has operated successfully for more than two centuries has had to evolve continuously while maintaining quality. That history represents generations of skills, techniques and experience being passed down over time. Clients recognise that heritage because it signals reliability and craftsmanship.

In an era of global supply chains, why is UK manufacturing and British craftsmanship still so important?

Local manufacturing naturally brings transparency and accountability. Clients increasingly want to understand where products come from, how they’re made and the standards behind them. Producing locally gives them that visibility.

British craftsmanship also carries a solid reputation for quality and attention to detail, and people still value that today.

What advantages does a British workshop-based manufacturer offer compared with imported or off-the-shelf solutions?

The biggest differences are flexibility and agility. Off-the-shelf products are designed for standardisation. Exceptional joinery is designed around a specific building, interior or design concept.

Working with a UK-based manufacturer allows much closer collaboration with designers and contractors, quicker problem-solving and a far greater level of quality control. That’s also why we have our own visualisation studio, so clients can experience materials and finishes before production begins. It also helps reduce the risks that can come with long-distance supply chains.

If you had to summarise the company’s approach in one sentence?

Denne Joinery combines generations of craftsmanship with modern manufacturing expertise to deliver exceptional, responsibly made joinery.

What makes the team at Denne special?

It’s the pride people take in their work. There’s a genuine respect for craftsmanship across the whole business, from the workshop floor to the design team. People genuinely care about the quality of what they produce. Our culture makes a huge difference.

When you walk through the workshop, what moments make you most proud?

Seeing the transformation of raw timber into beautifully finished pieces. You watch materials arrive in the workshop and, through the skill and care of the team, gradually become part of something much bigger – an interior space that people will experience every day. That’s incredibly rewarding.

For Ross, the future of high-quality joinery is about combining heritage and innovation. From responsibly sourced timber and British manufacturing to specialist craftsmanship developed over generations, Denne Joinery continues to evolve while staying true to the values that have defined the business since 1803. And as the company continues to grow, invest and gain industry recognition, it’s clear that the people, pride and passion behind the craft remain at the heart of everything they do.
