Health and Safety: Director Steven Hider’s non-negotiables

The past few years have seen us take on our most ambitious and challenging joinery projects yet. With this growth comes greater responsibility. Health and safety is more than a standard to meet, it’s the backbone of how we work and how we protect our people every day.

Steven Hider MCIOB, Director at Denne Joinery, has been steering this progress for decades. Today, he reveals what goes on behind the scenes, sharing how his approach protects the well-being of employees and the public while setting the whole team up for success.

That philosophy shapes every stage of our work. Each joinery project begins with our project managers creating their own RAMS (Risk Assessment Method Statement). By evaluating risks themselves, they gain a deep understanding of the job and plan accordingly. Each site has its own dedicated H&S file, and every team member signs up to the tasks they are carrying out in sequence, ensuring accountability and clarity.

Independent audits keep us sharp, but culture is that sets us apart. Steven instils the SKATE rule in everyone across our team:

  • Skills
  • Knowledge
  • Attitude
  • Training
  • Experience

SKATE ensures the right people with the right skills, experience and training are always in the right place. It creates a mindset where safety is seen not as a hurdle, but as the foundation of great work.

Alongside SKATE, Steven stands firmly by the 4P’s rule. By protecting our people and creating clear processes, we achieve stronger performance and sustainable profits. In other words, safety and success are inseparable.

Looking ahead, we know our projects will continue to grow in scale and ambition. Our commitment is that health and safety will always grow with them. By keeping our people safe, supported and empowered, we can take on bigger challenges with confidence. No shortcuts. No compromises. Health and safety will always remain at the very core of our growth and our future.
